How Much Does a Custom Engagement Ring Cost? A Burbank Jeweler’s Honest Answer

June 26, 2026

This is the question we hear more than almost any other, and it is the question that gets the most unhelpful answers online. “It depends” is technically accurate and completely useless when you’re trying to decide whether a custom ring is in your budget.

So here is what we actually tell people who walk into our studio at 122 E Alameda Ave and ask that exact question. Concrete numbers. What drives the price up and what keeps it reasonable. And what you get when you make a ring here that you simply cannot get when you buy from an online retailer.

The Short Answer

Custom engagement rings made in solid 14K gold at Burbank Jewelry Outlet typically range from $1,200 to $6,000 for the finished piece, depending on the design complexity, the metal choice, and the center stone. That range is wide, and the reason it’s wide is that a simple solitaire in yellow gold with a modest diamond is genuinely a very different project from a cathedral halo with milgrain detail and a larger stone.

The good news: because we design and manufacture in-house, you are not paying a retail markup on top of a wholesale cost plus a custom design fee charged separately by a design studio. One shop, one price, one team doing the work from sketch to finished ring.

What Drives the Cost of a Custom Ring

The Center Stone

This is almost always the biggest single line item in a custom ring. A center stone can be anywhere from 20% to 70% of the total cost depending on what you’re working with. The variables:

  • Carat weight: Diamond prices do not scale linearly. A 1.0ct stone costs significantly more than two 0.5ct stones of comparable quality, because larger stones are rarer. The jump from 0.9ct to 1.0ct is often disproportionately large relative to the visible size difference.
  • Cut: Cut is the most important quality factor for a diamond because it determines how the stone handles light. A well-cut 1.0ct stone will outperform a poorly cut 1.3ct stone visually. We’ll always tell you honestly what you’re looking at.
  • Color and clarity: The GIA color scale runs D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). The clarity scale runs FL (flawless) to I3 (included, visible to the eye). For most buyers, G or H color and VS2 or SI1 clarity is the practical sweet spot: visually clean, priced significantly below the top grades.
  • Lab-grown vs. natural: Lab-grown diamonds have become a real option for buyers who want a larger stone at a lower price point. We can work with either. They are visually, chemically, and physically identical to mined diamonds. The cost difference is significant.

If you already have a stone: We can design and make a ring around a stone you already own, whether it’s a family heirloom, an existing loose stone, or a stone you’ve sourced yourself. In that case, the cost of the ring is the metal and manufacturing only, which often runs $800 to $2,500 depending on setting complexity.

The Metal

Engagement rings are most commonly made in 14K gold or platinum. Here’s the practical difference:

  • 14K yellow gold: The most common choice and our primary metal. Solid 14K means the ring is 58.3% pure gold alloyed with metals that add durability. This is not gold-filled or gold-plated. It’s what we’ve been manufacturing with since 1978 and it holds up to daily wear reliably. Price impact: moderate.
  • 14K white gold: Same gold content, alloyed with white metals and rhodium-plated for a white finish. Rhodium plating wears over time and can be reapplied. Price impact: similar to yellow gold.
  • 14K rose gold: Alloyed with copper for the warm pink tone. Increasingly popular. Price impact: similar to yellow and white gold.
  • 18K gold (yellow, white, or rose): Higher gold content (75% pure), slightly softer and richer in color. More expensive than 14K due to gold content. Preferred by some buyers for the higher purity.
  • Platinum: Denser, whiter, and more durable than white gold. Does not require rhodium replating. Carries a premium over gold due to material cost and the different machining it requires. Typically adds $300 to $800 to the cost of the same ring made in 14K.

The Setting Design

This is where complexity meets cost. A simple four-prong solitaire in a plain shank is fast to model, cast, and finish. A cathedral halo with milgrain edging, a pavé band, and a split shank with accent stones involves more 3D modeling time, more hand-finishing time, and more small stones to be set one at a time.

Broadly, design complexity falls into three bands:

Complexity LevelDescriptionTypical Setting Cost (metal + labor, no stone)
SimpleSolitaire, 4 or 6 prong, plain or comfort-fit shank. Classic designs with minimal detail work.$800 to $1,400
ModerateHalo, pavé band, bezel or tension settings, shaped shanks with some detail. Side stones added.$1,400 to $2,800
ComplexMulti-row pavé, vintage milgrain, cathedral designs, custom sculptural elements, significant accent stone count.$2,800 and up

A Realistic Price Example

Let’s make this concrete. Here’s a scenario that represents a very common request:

  • Metal: 14K white gold
  • Setting: Classic four-prong solitaire with a plain polished band
  • Center stone: 1.0ct round brilliant diamond, G color, VS2 clarity, excellent cut

For a ring like this, expect a total price in the range of $4,500 to $6,500. The stone is carrying most of that cost. The setting in 14K white gold for this design runs $900 to $1,200. The rest is the diamond.

Now adjust the stone: same ring design, same metal, but a 0.75ct stone with comparable quality grades. Total moves to roughly $3,000 to $4,000, a meaningful difference in budget with minimal visible change in the finished piece to anyone who isn’t measuring.

Or choose a lab-grown diamond of the same specifications. The stone cost drops significantly, bringing the total down by 30% to 50% depending on the specific stone.

There is no single right answer. There is the ring that’s right for the two of you, at the budget that makes sense. That is the conversation we have during a design consultation.

What a Design Consultation at BJO Looks Like

When you come in for a design consultation at 122 E Alameda Ave, here is what happens:

  1. We talk through what you have in mind: the style, the metal, any references you’ve saved, and your budget.
  2. We show you stone options in the range that makes sense for what you’re describing. You can hold and compare them. You can see how they look under different lighting.
  3. If you have a design concept, we’ll sketch it with you and talk through what is and isn’t achievable at the budget.
  4. We quote the ring with the stone included so you see the total before anything is started.
  5. If you approve, we create a 3D model. You approve the 3D model before we cast it in gold. No surprises.

There’s no charge for the consultation and there’s no commitment when you walk in. We’re not going to pressure you. We’ve been in Burbank for 48 years; we’re not going anywhere, and neither is the conversation if you need time to think about it.

Why Custom, and Why Not Just Buy Retail?

This is worth saying plainly. If you buy a ring online from a major retailer, you are selecting from a catalog someone else designed for an imagined average buyer. The ring is sized to a standard, the stone is graded by parameters you may not fully understand, and if something is wrong you’re shipping it back and waiting.

A custom ring from BJO starts with what you actually want. The design exists because you asked for it. If we’ve seen the exact ring in our minds and built it to your specs, it fits your hand the way it was intended to because it was sized for you from the start.

And because we manufacture in-house, if a prong needs retipping in three years, or you want the band resized after a few winters, you come back to the same shop, talk to the same people, and the repair is handled by the team that made the ring. That continuity matters more than it sounds like it will before you’re the one holding a ring you’ve worn every day for a decade.
