Stone Setting in Burbank: Your Stone, Your Design

Stone setting requires a steady hand and a precision microscope. We have both at our Burbank bench. Whether you are bringing a loose stone you already own or selecting from our inventory, we set it here, in-house, so you can see the finished result before you leave.

Setting a stone is one of the most technically demanding steps in jewelry making. The prongs, bezels, or pavé rails that hold a stone in place must be shaped precisely to secure the stone without obscuring it, and any misjudgment in the setting process can crack the stone or damage the mounting.

At Burbank Jewelry Outlet, stone setting is performed under precision magnification at our Burbank studio bench by the same jewelers who design and cast the pieces we sell. We set stones in prong, bezel, channel, and pavé configurations depending on the piece and the stone.

Bring your own stone: If you have a stone from another piece, an estate item, or a purchase made elsewhere, bring it in for an assessment. We will evaluate it, check the current mounting if applicable, and give you an honest opinion on whether and how it can be set in a new piece.

Stone Types We Set

Diamonds, Colored Stones, and Cabochons

We set most faceted and cabochon gemstones at our Burbank bench. Soft stones require special handling and are assessed individually before any work begins.

Diamonds

All cut grades and shapes set in prong, bezel, channel, and pavé configurations. We inspect each stone and mounting under magnification before committing to a setting approach.

Sapphires, Rubies & Emeralds

The classic corundum and beryl family. Hardness makes them well-suited for most setting styles. Emeralds are handled with care due to their natural inclusions and brittleness.

Morganite & Aquamarine

The beryl family in pink and blue. Durable enough for daily wear rings. We assess cleavage planes and cut quality before choosing the setting style.

Soft Stones: Opals, Pearls & Turquoise

Low Mohs hardness requires individual assessment. We evaluate each piece and discuss the right approach before any work begins. Not every mounting is suitable for soft stones.

Most Faceted Gemstones

From garnets and citrines to tourmalines and topaz. If it has a standardized cut and reasonable hardness, we can set it. Unusual shapes may require a custom bezel.

Cabochon Gemstones

Dome-cut stones including turquoise, lapis lazuli, moonstone, and labradorite. Cabochons typically work best in bezel settings to protect the unfaceted surface.

Setting Configurations

Four Setting Styles, Matched to Your Piece

The setting style is chosen based on the stone shape, the mounting design, and how the piece will be worn. We walk you through the options at your consultation.

Prong

Metal tines hold the stone elevated, maximizing light through the face. The most common setting for solitaire diamonds and colored stones.

Bezel

A continuous metal rim wraps the perimeter of the stone. The most protective setting style. Well-suited for soft stones, cabochons, and active wearers.

Channel

Stones sit side by side in a groove between two metal rails with no prongs between them. Common in wedding bands and anniversary rings with uniform-cut stones.

Pavé

Small stones set closely together across a surface, held by tiny beads of metal. Creates a continuous sparkle effect. Requires precision work and is done under magnification.
